Himalayan salt lamps are carved from amber-coloured rock salt found in underground mines in the Himalayan, hollowed out to fit a lightbulb inside. When you light them they give out a warm, reddish-pink glow and the heat from the lightbulb triggers a hygroscopic effect, attracting moisture from the environment. The candle holders work on a similar principle.
It is thought that the salt, when warmed, releases negative ions which help eliminate dust particles and purify the surrounding air. The lamps are also believed to have a healing effect, boost your overall mood and help you sleep more soundly.
Himalayan salt is hygroscopic in nature and it is the moisture absorbed from the environment that causes the salt lamps to leak. This will only usually happen in damp/cold environments and not commonly inside a warm house. If leakage does occur it is best to stand the lamp on a mat and wipe it down regularly.
The bulbs used in the lamps are E14 screw base 15W bulb and are widely available. It is not recommended to use LED bulbs as they will not generate much heat and therefore limit the hygroscopic effect.
There have been a few incidents recorded of pets getting ill from salt poisoning due to licking the lamps. Most pets will ignore the lamps but it is good to observe them closely when you first introduce the lamps in to their environment and position them out of reach if there are any issues.
Are the lamps safe?
In 2017 there was a recall of Lumiere salt lamps due to dimmer switches overheating. Itβs important to note that these were from a specific manufacturer and sold in the USA where cable accessories do not have any safety measures in them. UK standard fittings have a fuse in them protecting the user from any electrical issues. Your lamp from Mystical Gems is fitted with a UK standard cable so it is safe to use without any worry.
TOP TIPS: Use your lamp as much as possible; when not using the salt lamp for long periods of time, do not leave your lamp in a humid room or outside where the salt lamp can be exposed to the elements. Window sills and bathrooms are not ideal locations for your Himalayan salt lamp due to moisture.
